I fail.

I put "find out final details for MeFi meetup" on my to-do list for Friday. Then forgot to check it because my laptop died. Just checked it again two minutes ago.

Oh well, hope everyone else had fun. :/ :)

I don't recall the name of the Mefite who was walking around with the bottle clutched in her hand, but since she assured me that there was only a couple fingers left by the time she found it, I just wish her well and I'll take that as an endorsement (and hope no one else before her had poured a whole tumblerfull of it, because I can only IMAGINE what kind of hangover that must have induced).

I had so much fun with you New Yorkers and made some lovely new friends. It was much better than the first day of school--And yes, the ice was superb. I woke up hoarse, so I must have talked a lot. Plus, as I’ve come to expect regarding all things Metafilter, I learned a lot, e.g.:

*There are sex clubs in Japan where a man can pay to touch women who pretend that he is invisible and say “Hey! What just touched me??”

*Pear vodka takes like Jolly Ranchers.

*Thomas Jefferson presciently blasted the Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 with this one: He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine receives light without darkening me.

*More squirrel color variety in Illinois than in New Jersey.

*Satan does not torment you, per se. He tempts you to torment yourself.

*That afroblanco guy does not have an afro blanco.

Thanks again to the NYC organizers and NYC Mefites for a fantastic party!

It went well enough, I suppose, but there was much more planned than there was in fruition. I am filing an official appeal, based on numerous irregularities in the 10th year meetup process (for instance, afroblanco does not have a blanco afro, I mean, jeez!)

I demand a redo. This entire 10 year celebration needs to be performed again, correctly this time, within the next six months.

posted by thegreatfleecircus at 1:43 PM on July 20, 2009

I just followed the basic "how to" page on this web site (it is a web site entirely devoted to one guy's continuing experimentation with different recipes for limoncello). I actually made it several months ago, but then 3 days before the party I re-filtered it once more for kicks, and then added those big curls of lemon rind to make it look pretty and give it an extra lemon kick.

I found the original recipe on that guy's site to be a bit too sweet for my own taste, while others loved it; I personally tend to like my lemonade to be a bit tart as well, so that could definitely be a matter of individual taste.

posted by lolichka at 9:14 PM on July 20, 2009

As the defacto security officer, I am fairly sure the cops came only once, tho if TPS remembers them being there, well, I know she had left when they came the one time I think they came.

There were no knives with which to have a knife fight, so that did not happen.

There was ample booze left. I just removed the kegs and keg apparatus from the space. There will be monies left over once I pay off my lawyer (thanks, circusguy!) and get the heavy keg deposits back. Sticky and I will take our cut, and the overage will go to a charity or two in Metafilter's name, I'm thinking the CBLDF, whoever Dan Savage says to donate to, and maybe some group that feeds the poor, roughly $100 each.

If i ever do this again i would buy booze based on hard RSVPs only; the 100 or so "maybes", and the general thirsty nature of mefites resulted in perhaps too much booze, but better that than running out.

Based on the turnout and amount of BYOB I see no reason to not make this the start of a rotating (rotato?) monthly meetup/drinking club.

This is where, if i knew how to do it, i would say in tinyscript that i am only joking about Sticky and i taking our cut.

And now I'm going to smoke some grass and pass out.

So, I've been thinking. We were in the basement, right? But out on the smokers' landing, there were creepy steps going further down. Was there another sub-basement below us? Did it have monsters?

Oh my, yes, we suspect so, yes, but not based on any evidence obtained from the smoking area itself. The hanging light was enough to keep anyone from wandering down, I think. There was a cowboy hat on top of it for a while that made the whole apparatus look vaguely threatening...

But do you remember the door to the right of the bathroom door? And do you remember opening that door, most likely to see if it might lead to a second bathroom? And do you remember being shocked that the room inside, with power-tools and raw wood strewn about everywhere really very much resembled the sort of room you might see in a horror movie, the room that the most frightening thing/person you've ever seen will use for doing terrible things to flawed-but-not-so-terrible people? (I think it was Dormant who dubbed this the Kill Room.) And do you remember not being able to help but walk further into that room? And do you remember finding a second door inside, around the corner? And do you remember opening that door to see a completely unlit machine-room behind it? And do you remember waiting for your eyes to adjust to the light? And do you remember seeing -- but barely believing you were seeing -- a pit leading down to a previously undiscovered subbasement?

That's as far as my investigations went. As we were leaving someone reported -- in what I took at the time to be an unironic tone -- that there are people living down there. I didn't have a chance to ask if they were monster people or friendly people.

I saw a few of the building residents coming in during the party. One, who seemed to be in a foul mood, came in, made us all move our chairs around so the door to the elevator shaft (which was labeled broken) was clear, and climbed in. Schroedinger asked, wow, if that's broken, is she going to crank it up herself, isn't that illegal? A voice from inside the elevator shaft replied, "Yes I am! And I'm not illegal! YOU ARE ILLEGAL!"

whew! didn't realize this thread existed. just wanted to chime in and say that it was awesome meeting everyone I met. my biggest regret, if it can be called that, is that I didn't get to meet more people.

however, I learned horrible horrible things about both David Byrne and Tom Waits, heard live-speech metafilter taglines, found out what kind of people will paint a mefi-blue stairwell (fucking awesome people, that's who), learned that you can forget stupid internet conversations when you meet in person and generally had a fucking blast.

you all rock my ass off. for reals. my ass is missing, now.

By the way, I've learned a lot of things about the basement, and the sub-basement, and most of the rumors being tossed about are...

...well...

I'll just say that ignorance of the reality of the building you were in will let you sleep soundly. What I have seen, I can never unsee. The sub-basements extend well out from the building, under the street, and sprawl cyclopean in a mind-bending maze filled with unspeakable artifacts from a long-forgotten New York. It is a place beyond your wildest fever dreams; it is possessed of an atmosphere from beyond the veil of human knowledge. The lurking dread I felt in those forsaken passages haunts me to this day.

As for the rumors of... those that live below? I shall spare the reader the details, for truly I tell you the knowledge would defile your soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I met a nice young lady around 2:30 am, who didn't know what Metafilter was. However, she had a nametag with both a goofy username and a real name. When I asked her about it, she shrugged and said that on her way in, she was told to make up such a nametag, so she did. She was visiting from Florida, staying with friends who lived down the street.

In other news, I would say that the worst date of my life involved a series of lemoncello servings (none of them my idea) that rendered my companion completely incoherent and insane for the rest of the night, and not in a good way. But it's nice to hear that some people enjoy it.

You know, I wondered whether we had some party crashers at some point. But I chalked that up to my own personal "oh god i'm turning into an old crank" paranoia.

I think the party majority tipped from Mefite to non-Mefite somewhere around midnight. A lot of people coming in were friends of Mefites or of the bands.

Thanks for the good time, everyone, and for getting my boyfriend and I so drunk that our cab driver had to wake us up when he got to our place. I'm still sweating the Rittenhouse out of my system.

I don't remember there being so many people around for that story. Was it told more than once? Also, I doubted it's authenticity at the time, but I realize now I was thinking of Brian Eno. David Byrne? Sure!

(Also, while we're here, it's a little disappointing that none of the photos posted have usernames attached, no? How are we to remember who is who?)

I think I avoided most photos, but if anyone is more bored than I am and going through flickr more thoroughly, I'm tallish, brunette, was wearing a blue tank top and black shrug.

It was my first meetup and I had about five people ask me about MeFi and what it was, what we do, the site, etc. I felt like a Metafilter ambassador. They were really nice folks though.

I guess I just look friendly. People ask me for directions all the time and old ladies ask me to help them cross the street. I'm not even kidding. I thought the latter was the stuff of cartoons.

by the way, guys, I meant to say this way earlier, but if I met you in person (with certain exceptions) chances are I don't recall your mefi username. I'm terrible with names, and I liked meeting people on their own merits without any preconceptions based on mefi, so chances are I'll remember you in real life without knowing your username. if this is okay with you, rock. if not, and you'd like me to associate your username with my fuzzy memories from the evening, hit me up with a memail. either way, you're all rockin' individuals.

About a monthly rotating meetup: I have to imagine that at least a dozen people would want to get drunk together on or around the 18th of each month. We can meet at bars, at each other's places, and if big enough numbers respond, in spaces like that one. Any ideas for Aug.? The earliest I could host one would be Oct.

It's at SummerStage, on the East side of the park, sort of between 69th and 72nd. It might be easiest to cross over the park to the West side for drinks afterward.

I'm pretty sure it was something like "Huff This," which is the name of a band with a myspace page. But I can't be certain it's them because it seems you need to be a member to see their photos. Shouldn't being a part of this one online community absolve me of the need to join any others? Hope this helps.
