We need to pick a date and time between July 17 and July 19 and a location.

Heya Mefi'ers of the National Capital Region!

I'm thinking of somewhere on Preston Street. I have no preferences on date.

What do y'all think?

I'm normally all up for Ottawa meetups, but the Toronto one has 40+ attendees! Bigger parties are always more fun. Join us!

I'm sorry I'm defecting.

Toronto is too far away for me.
posted by sindark at 7:11 PM on June 6, 2009

I am interested in an Ottawa get-together.

If Preston Street is the preferred neighbourhood, how about Pub Italia as a venue? The decor is cheesy, but the food is ok and there are many, many types of beer available.

I'd be interested in a meet-up; however, work and personal commitments are likely to hinder my attendence. My commitments will only be finalized on the 16th.

I'll register as a "maybe."

Finalized on July the 16th, that is.
posted by kiki_s at 6:18 PM on June 7, 2009

I'd be up for this.

I should add, depending on the location. I don't drive, so if it's too far out of centretown, I'm out.
posted by aclevername at 9:11 PM on June 10, 2009

I don't drive either.

Count me in as a maybe, depending on familial commitments (which is supposedly why I'm in the area at all).

Saturday would be the best day, since there isn't much I want to see at Bluesfest then. But like I said, I'm only a maybe at best, so don't count my vote with much weight.

Thanks for the comments, folks!

Let's put a stake in the ground:

Date/Time: July 18th, Saturday @ 6:00.
Place: Pub Italia (following Sindark's suggestion).

Webpage for Pub Italia here. I've been there before. It's good food and the decor is um, interesting! Because of Preston street closure, a little maneuvering is needed to get to the parking lot. You can see the recommended route in the map at the bottom of the web page.

Unfortunately, there is a Fringe Festival wine and cheese event on Saturday the 20th, between 5:00pm and 7:00pm.

If other people will be at Pub Italia, I could definitely try to swing by after it.
posted by sindark at 8:20 PM on June 14, 2009

If there's no objection, we can move the time to 7:00!
posted by storybored at 11:35 AM on June 15, 2009

Works for me - date, time, & location.
posted by aclevername at 11:15 PM on June 17, 2009

I went by around 7:30pm and went through the entire place twice. I didn't see any plausible looking groups, or anyone who asked if I was looking for a Metafilter gathering.

None of the servers were aware of a group either...
posted by sindark at 5:03 PM on June 20, 2009

Whoops, terribly sorry for the miscommunication, sindark.

The date and time is *July 18th*. When I read your posting of a conflict, i thought you were saying there was a conflict on that date, but I see now you were probably talking about the 20th (of June).

To avoid any further trouble I've made the date and time official.
posted by storybored at 5:30 PM on June 20, 2009

...i.e. the time/date/place is now on the planning page
posted by storybored at 5:34 PM on June 20, 2009

Ah, thanks for clarifying.

I would be up for a meetup on July 18th. I live near centertown and I can offer a lift to any Mefite who needs one.
posted by troll on a pony at 6:57 PM on June 22, 2009

I've registered as maybe since I will be returning from a week out of town on the 18th and may not be able to make it, but I'll make every effort.
If anyone's here during July 11-18, we can have our own little meetup, but I find it highly improbable.

Thanks to all for your responses so far!

here's a question of Mefi etiquette: Should I drop a MeFi mail msg invite to all the Mefites who lives in the Ottawa area or would that be too intrusive?

I'm easy either way. Small gathering or large, both have their particular charms.
posted by storybored at 2:38 PM on June 29, 2009

I see nothing wrong with sending out an invite, and wouldn't be instrusive.
posted by BozoBurgerBonanza at 8:53 AM on June 30, 2009

No, not intrusive. Thanks for sending it out. I didn't realize there were this many people around. I should be able to make it. I was considering going to the Toronto meetup but the chances of that seem pretty slim right now.
posted by benign at 8:14 PM on July 4, 2009

Great!

By now you folks may have noticed that I sent out the invites to all of you wonderful people, even those who have already said they were coming. But I had the idea last nite of having a mascot and couldn't resist sending it out to all and sundry. And as well, I don't think the whole free drink thing has been mentioned before....

Keep yerselves healthy, only two weeks to go!

This is gonna be tough... I mean, Bluesfest is in full swing and I'd love to drink beer and watch the Drive-By Truckers.... but, if the weather isn't great (which is a distinct possibility) I would love to swing by and hang with you cats.
posted by Tbola at 9:25 PM on July 4, 2009

Unfortunately, I'll be out of town this weekend. Enjoy the good company and drinks, all.
posted by kiki_s at 9:11 AM on July 13, 2009

Will there be a reservation? How will we find the group?
posted by aclevername at 9:44 AM on July 13, 2009

They sadly don't take reservations on Saturday evenings. What I will do is go a little early and get a table, plus put up a Metafilter sign and for good measure tell the server.
posted by storybored at 9:01 AM on July 14, 2009

As an FYI, there is some nasty construction on Preston in front of Pub Italia at the moment.
Plan on using a side street for parking, guys/gals.
posted by Tbola at 7:03 PM on July 16, 2009

Sorry guys but I won't be able to make it. I am still here in NFLD and I can't get back to Ottawa in time for the meetup. I'll have to buy a round at the next meetup.
Cheers

Troll and kiki_s, we hope to do shoutouts for those who've posted here but can't make it. :)

Latest update: I'll be bringing some custom made MeFi 10th anniversary nametags. As well I have a bunch of leftover loot from a mystery writing conference I helped to organize last month that's been taking up space in my basement. Freebies for everyone!

See y'all tomorrow. Bring yer mascot candidates! And cameras.
posted by storybored at 12:30 PM on July 17, 2009

I will be there.
posted by BozoBurgerBonanza at 4:51 PM on July 17, 2009

a bit late to this, but I hope to make it later tomorrow
(if work permits... it's looking 50/50)

Thanks for organizing, storybored

Just posting to say that I am coming but I'll be late, maybe half an hour.
posted by benign at 3:27 PM on July 18, 2009

If anyone is looking at their blackberry... I am leaving shortly. I will be there 7.30 or so.

Well a fine time was had, begorrah, at the meetup. Meetup MeFi'ers proved themselves worthy of the name by braving the weather, negotiating the road construction, and then finding the way to the secret Abbey at the back of the restaurant!

The mascot election: Robbie (Red Robot Party) ran against Mr Spud (Potato Head Party). Mr Spud's campaign manager, BBBonanza put in some starchy words on his candidate's behalf. Robbie burped a marble from his abdomen. And the result of the vote....a tie! Both were declared victorious.

The meetup lasted until about 11:00. Four hours of thread chat, drinks, appetizers and general merriment.

Only regret: not being able to get a picture of the nuns.

Best part: meeting cool people! And without further ado: pictures

Well, belatedly... thanks for organising this, storybored. (And thanks for the drinks, Matt.) Great time. Looking ahead to the next NCR meet-up.
