MeFi's own eotvos has agreed to "meet" in Antarctica in honor of MeFi's 10th to bring us to seven continents!

If you round up two penguins with Metafilter accounts, eotvos, you can get $50 of Mefi Money for drinkin'!

Hey, two penguins and $50 of drinks and you might get more than that!

Thanks for the note. There's 43 of us down here (at pole, that is, not McMurdo) so the chances are slim but not impossible. I suspect afterward there may be several more.

[Updated the location to the South Pole, but Google Maps is having trouble placing a marker.]

Thanks, pb. I'm sure anyone able to attend will be able to find it without the map.

...just keep going south until you start going north, and then back up a couple of steps. Easy!

Finally! I'll put myself down as a "Maybe".

Still weighing your options?

Sweet! I was going to gift my sister an account ( at mcmurdo) so there'd be all 7 continents, but now I don't have to!

You guys probably won't run out of ice.

So, how'd it go, eotvos? Pictures?

Our goal for the twentieth should be to have a meetup at Lenin's head.
posted by dhartung at 9:34 PM on July 19, 2009

The south pole meetup was quite a lot of fun. While I didn't *meet* anybody - at least, anybody who I haven't also met at breakfast every day for the last five months - we did throw a party in MeFi's honor. Around 15 people turned out, and most of us hung around for about three hours. There was only one actual member, but several people knew of the site. I expect some more polies may show up here in time.

I added a group photo from the event above. (A couple of us went out to take a MeFi hero shot at the pole marker this morning, but ran into camera trouble. Will give it another go in the next few days and post here.)

That is just so cool...erm...great! :) I think next time, we should all come to visit you guys! :)

Hey dhartung, do you mean the Lenin's head at the pole of inaccessibility, or the actual head of Lenin? (Or perhaps some other head?) All would be fun, though the first is mighty hard to get to, and the second isn't really a good place to throw a party.

Hey eotvos, if any of the winterovers were there last year, tell them hi from one of Sue's crazy 'net friends. (Sue worked meteorology.)
posted by elfgirl at 9:41 AM on July 24, 2009

Hi elfgirl - We've got a couple of returns, including the other met person from last year. I'll pass that along.

Also, a second photo is up.

Why can I not favorite this?! This needs, like, 1700 favorites! It may very well be the coolest metafilter related photo I've ever seen!
posted by ocherdraco at 8:55 PM on July 24, 2009

eotvos, I'm assuming that in ten years there will be an ice highway to the Pole of Inaccessibility traversed by robotic Sno-Cats, as in Kim Stanley Robinson's Antarctica.

If not, we've got work to do.

ocherdraco, no kidding. Although there's no way to favorite it, you can flag it as fantastic -- that's what I ended up doing. eotvos, that is truly a fantastically fantastic photo. And congrats on a successful meetup.

I just came here from the sidebar. Love the pics, eotvos (especially the one at the pole marker)! I didn't go to any of the meetups, but seeing everyone's pics makes me feel happy to be a part of such a cool group of people.

Meh. South Pole, Schmouth Pole. I'll be impressed when there's a meetup at the North Pole. With Santa Claus.

Along with a blanket recommendation for Big Dead Place in its entirety. [prev on MeFi]

Just saw this. Flagged as fantastic, downloaded and save. Someone's got to use this on a record or collection of songs, or a book or a magazine or something.
