I'm volunteering to see to the technical details: especially regarding live hookups between meetups.

Let's seek out the right place, I think it would really help if we could find a spot where we have at least 48 hours access in advance. Maybe this can be more like a loft party than hanging at a club. A couple of microbrew kegs and a few roasted turkeys perhaps?

Sounds like a lot of fun to me! Regarding live hookups, I suppose we'd have to have our meetup at the same time as other meetups; wonder when the other meetups will be taking place. Will have to keep an eye on the other threads.

We'll be on New Orleans time, which means that there's a good chance we'll all sleep until the sun goes down and then we'll be up all night sweating.

Chicago's party will be on Saturday. We'll definitely have a webcam or two going, so I'll touch base to co-ordinate when we get closer to the MeFanniversary.

I'm just starting to actually evaluate the performance of the various video chat / webcasting services out there.

I'll put some thoughts here, but I think a unifed thread may be in order soon so everyone can share their knowledge.

As I get up to speed on this I'm learning things like that chat can be much more interactive if it is run with a wired connection through the modem, and doesn't go through a router.

Wired connections are better than wifi, of course

Google video chat and the Skype "pro" option are looking pretty clear as far as quality. Don't worry about Skype pro account price, for one or two nights only it cost almost nothing.

Time Warner in NYC will install a cable modem for $39, and then cancel the next month no prob. I'm thinking we might get 2 cable connections, and combine them in an aggragating modem to increase bandwidth, or just upgrade service for that month.

Any experiences to share, please do.

Dear Mr. StickyCarpet,

It looks like Sao Paulo is one hour ahead of NYC, but we are doing our thang on Saturday as well.

However, I think that the SP meetup might have already slid into drunken debauchery by the time communications will be feasible, and carrying my webcam-equipped laptop through the seedy back alleys of Sao Paulo doesn't sound like a good idea...

Will you also have facilities installed in your command center for receiving astral projections? I think that might be the most feasible solution in our case.

Don't worry, Meatbomb, we have a paper cut-out of you ready, I just finished gluing on some little pieces of hair I found under my bed.

Maybe we can patch a cell phone into the PA?
