Saturday the 18th? 7pm? The Up North? Or a place with an outside?
Discuss!

I'm up for it. The Up North has an outside, but I'd just as soon go anywhere other than the Essen Haus/CBI/UN conglomeration. It's not awful, but it does leave something to be desired in the food and comfort department.

Terrace? Dane? Argus?

I love the Big 10 Pub, and they have a nice back room. They don't have outdoor seating, though.

Agreed about the EH/CBI/UN--it's just where others have been. Who's got a deck downtown with good beer? Mellow+cozy+room to converse seems to be a good thing.

The Dane will be insane on the weekend, but I guess I'd be game for it. Madison's first meetup was held in the basement there.

Since it's summer, we could have good luck with some of the State St.-area establishments. I will never say no to the Plaza.

But the trifecta of Mellow/Beer/Deck in the downtown area is a tough one. In my experience, the best "hangout" spots are further down the isthmus, on the near-east side, in the Willy/Bago/Atwood corridor.

Rocketman, you're not wrong there. What's Mickey's deck like in that post-dinner, pre-goingout time?

I don't think I've been to the Plaza... will check it out tonight!

I'm no regular at Mickey's, but it's a good bet to remain low-key before 9-10pm.

I'm on the Near West so slightly support something closer in than Mickey's -- but if the attendance is east-heavy, I'm happy to concede this point.

I'll go west for this, for sure, but I'm limited in range by my bicycle. I can get to anywhere in a 45-mile radius, but getting home after several drinks might pose a problem.

Some promising areas for congregating: Monroe St., the Park St. corridor, State St./Capitol Square, how about the Caribou?

Also, this is maybe too far east for some, but the Cottage Grove Road area is getting some neat places.

As much as I dig the Caribou, it'll be too small if we have more than two people...

Total fail on my part so far re: the Plaza. Will try again this weekend. Any thoughts on Montemarte?

If we're still suggesting venues here, how about the Alchemy (former Wonder's Pub) at the corner of Winnebago & Atwood? There's a bank parking lot nearby that's never full, and the onion rings are excellent.

I like Montmartre a lot though it'll be too loud if a band's playing.
posted by escabeche at 3:22 PM on May 30, 2009

Ack, good point about the bands. I've been looking to get to Alchemy but every time I've tried, the noise level chases us right back out the door. Is it better Sat. nights 7-10?

OH, RIGHT, that The Plaza. Yeah, that'll do nicely -- big enough, central, and mellow. And yeah, the burgers are pretty good and the beer selection is reasonable.

Calling it -- see you there -- Saturday the 18th at 7pm!

Yay for the Plaza!

Well, good thing we didn't pick Montmartre; they just closed.

I may be there a bit late, by the way -- will be taking Escabechito to the county fair that afternoon and need to get him home and to bed before heading out to celebrate.

We'll wait!

We're in the back corner opposite the door!

Should be heading over there in a half hour or so -- how's parking?

Oh man, I just remembered this was tonight. D'oh!
