Wellington Planning Thread

Seeing as exactly half of the Mefites that turned up to the last Wellington Meetup now live overseas - this could be a good opportunity for some others to come out of the wood work.

I like the Malthouse, because it has nice beer - but open to suggestions.

Well done, I have been lurking, but afraid to put my head on the block for organising. Was thinking I'd have to go to Sydney! Still might.
I think the Malthouse is a great idea.

I totally flaked on the last meetup, but determined to make this one.

Great news Catch - maybe step 1 should be promoting this event to the locals over the next couple of weeks and get a conversation going about the best time and place for this to happen.

Malthouse is a good one though - what do you other peeps think or feel?

I have been watching the map too, but wasn't planning to organise. My wife (also a Metafilterite) and I may be able to come to this. I don't know Wellington well enough to vote on locations, but Saturday would be easier for us than Friday.

So, who do we know who is a Wellifite? I was kind of expecting Stephen Judd to get to this thread before me.

Saturday is probably easier for me too, baby-sitting wise.

I'm totally up for it.

I like the Malthouse (apart from their urinals). Also favour Mighty Mighty, Watusi, anywhere I can sit down that isn't too loud...

How about I MeMail all "nearby" -- http://www.metafilter.com/usersnear/10651 -- and see if we can't drum up some interest.

Great idea Stephen.

OK, done. Except for Catch and Sam Farrow, cos that seemed kind of pointless. I also sent to one or two others who I know to be nearby.

If I can get cheap flights down from Auckland, I might come.

Having lurked forever & finally joined, I might as well be in for a penny; in for a pound - so I'll be there.

I can pretty much do whenever (I think) - and don't really mind where.

I'd like to come if I can get a cheap flight from Chch. What date?

I am new in Wellington and would love to come.

Great Andrew.

How about Saturday July 18th?

Works for me.

July 18th. Ok. I should have finished welding the deluxe baby restraining cage by then.
posted by Catch at 3:49 PM on June 7, 2009

I have emailed the venue to sort out these dates - are there any special requirements from anyone for this - eg wireless data network.

Also how about food and what kinds of activities should we look at uncluding maybe, present your favourite thread. Wha are the best NZ threads over the years on the blue.

Exciting!

Activity ideas:

"Dress as your most humiliating Metatalk callout"

"Can you get the barman to say PONY (five points), PLATE OF BEANS (seven points), PEPSI BLUE (ten points)?"

I quite like the favourite thread idea. I also am in favour of talking shit and drinking copiously.

WRT food, surely we ought to lay on pies, sausage rolls, and cheerios. Either that or internationally sophisticated Pacific Rim fusion cuisine to show how with it we are.

How about Saturday July 18th?

Not so much on my birthday.

Oh the irony! I will be in Wellington that weekend but unable to attend.
I'm sure you're all very disappointed.

I will be in Wellington that weekend but unable to attend. Eponyironical
I am disappointed, for one. A lot on in Welly that weekend, for sure.

Regarding food, would anyone be up for a meal somewhere, and make a real night of it?
posted by Catch at 4:25 AM on June 18, 2009

I can confirm that I'll probably be after some food. And I'm up for the 18th.

Just one question though... I've never been to one of these - how do you know which one's the Mefi group when you walk in the door?
posted by MatJ at 2:24 PM on June 18, 2009

I've been asked to present a workshop in Chch on the Friday, then I start teaching on the Monday. Much as I would love to decompress, time and money are the deciding factors and I will have to skip it until the next 10th anniversary.
posted by tracicle at 2:51 AM on June 23, 2009

That's a shame, tracicle, I was looking forward to meeting you in person at last.

MatJ: I am sure I can find some item of clothing to distinguish me if you like.

"how do you know which one's the Mefi group when you walk in the door?"

Do you know, I have been biting my tongue over the answer to this for days. Sobriety finally conquers.

I'd be fine with wearing a HELLO MY NAME IS label or such, maybe we should have some table signage.

I will be wearing black, of course, being an old-school Wellingtonian, but my black coat has tails, and large brassy buttons. I will be outside, because I am a smoker, and I will have a bearded hippy with me (plus one).

Do we have a time?
posted by Catch at 2:48 PM on June 23, 2009

How about 18:00 at Malthouse and we can look to go out for dinner later if people are keen? If we agree this I'll set the venue and the time.
posted by Samuel Farrow at 7:43 PM on June 30, 2009

I'm happy with that

Rats, sadly I will not be able to make it that weekend. Oh well, next time...
posted by AndrewStephens at 1:30 AM on July 5, 2009

I am looking forward to this - 10 years on. Man Metafilter has been good for me, and you make this the place it is - soppy sentimentality ahoy.

Likewise.

BTW folks, if you've only been following this thread, you may not realise that there is a widget here which in turn feeds into the count of attendees on the main page. Do click it to encourage others, if you haven't already.

I'm so sorry everyone that I couldn't make it, in fact I am gutted.
I was sledgehammered by some kind of virus (not SwineFlu!).

No photos, no anecdotes?

Sam and Enki and I hung out in the Malthouse talking shit for a couple of hours before blaphod joined us. A good but low-key time was had by me and I hope all. Sam took and twittered some pix with his well-known-branded phone: 1, 2, 3.

We also scared off a few people with our nerdy back-story but managed to engage a self-employed martial arts instructor in conversation. He was waiting for friends having failed to get tickets for the latest Harry Potter movie.

We did miss you. Hope you're feeling better. Reckon we could organise another one soon.
