Here's the deal on alcohol for the party- the plan and requests for donations inside!

As we are having our party in a private space, we will be furnishing our own bar. vrakatar, new potato, and I have developed a plan that we think will best serve the needs of party goers- we plan to provide beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages, and people can bring whatever else they want. The total estimated cost for what we think we'll need in advance comes to around $1500. Please consider making a Paypal donation (to me, address in profile) of an amount that feels comfortable to you. Even $5 would be helpful and appreciated. All donations received will be used toward the party. I will keep this thread updated with how much we've raised and cut off fundraising when we reach our goal.

I can't go because my boyfriend and I are going to Otakon, but I'll donate $100 because, dammit, NYC should have the best party and TPS, you are working hard for this and I appreciate what you are doing. Not only for this, but for all the gatherings you organize. So this is my thank you to you :)

Since I generally prefer whiskey to beer/wine/whatever, would it be ok to just bring a big bottle of whiskey to share with others? Or would donations towards the general bar still be helpful?

(Can totally do either or both, just wondering)

Donations toward the general bar would definitely still be helpful.

The NY meetup is the grandest of all, so if you can both pledge to the beer/wine fund and show up with a jug, please do! If you are planning to get there late, say, after 10pm, bring ice.

We will need a lot of ice.

What a perfect opportunity to use up those spirits that have been sitting around for years in your liquor cabinet.

I'm 98% sure of going and I can bring some Bandits.

Bandits, if you did not know, are the wonderfully drinkable, horrifyingly cheap box wines that *nice* retailers stick in the back cause they're in boxes. Do not let that fool you, they're the equal of any palatable rotgut and at half the price. I also know the owner of Original Sin Cider and maybe I can get a box delivered, they always have more than they can sell.

If I had more time, I'd make a batch of Red Dragon, but really, who needs that?

We now have sponsorship! Original Sin Cider is donating 2 boxes of hard cider for us. I'm not sure how to thank them aside from showing the bottle a lot in flickr photos.

Yay!

BYOB-etiquette filter:

I sometimes make my own liqueurs by infusing flavorings in vodka or brandy. I have a standard wine-bottle-sized bottle of limoncello I could bring -- if the thought of bringing an alcoholic substance that was "homemade" doesn't freak people out.

So how would people feel about that? Does the notion of something "homemade" make people twitch uncomfortably to the point that they'd leave it alone, or would people have a taste? I'm just leery of bringing something and putting it proudly on the table and people thinking that they'd rather not, but then it sits there and people feel like I'm going to be offended, so someone tries it but then gets nervous and spends the rest of the night worrying and...

(For the record -- this is infused, not distilled. I don't have a moonshiner's still tucked into my closet -- I work solely with infused things, where you take a bottle of Stoli or Everclear, dump a pint of fruit in it, and let it all sit in your cupboard for a couple months, then strain and filter the hell out of it before rebottling it in a clean bottle. But that still may put some people off, and I understand.)

Bring on the hommeade booze! Generally at such high concentrations of alcohol, no sketchy pathogens can survive anyway.

(You've inspired me to try and whip something up as well.)
posted by Jon_Evil at 10:46 AM on July 15, 2009

Yeah, bring it along. I'll certainly have some, and there will be plenty to drink besides if homemade hooch is too scary for anyone.

Current total raised- $620.76. At this point, I'm going to ask people to bring their donations to the party in cash if at all possible, since I don't think I'll be able to withdraw any more money from my Paypal account in time for Saturday.
