I'll be shuttling a few folks from the airport to hotels, but a few folks were talking about meeting up for drinks at Mimi's in the Marigny around nine Friday night. It's a good bar and there's usually live music and they serve fantastic tapas upstairs. posted by ColdChef at 2:24 PM on July 7, 2009
My boyfriend and I are expecting to spend some of Friday night camped out at the Deja Vu (the bar, not the strip club with the same name), which is conveniently across the street from our hotel. If you don't feel like leaving the French Quarter that night, come join us! posted by cabingirl at 8:07 AM on July 8, 2009
we can take one more for dinner at 5:30 . .. . mefimail me. posted by liketitanic at 6:56 AM on July 11, 2009
Mygothlaundry et moi expect to be rolling in post 6ish- perhaps this 9 o'clock venue will be a perfect staging area to start scanning cats. posted by moonbird at 10:22 PM on July 12, 2009
ColdChef, how many can Mimi's comfortably hold on a summer Friday night? The tapas menu looked really good. Should we commit now or just wing it? posted by lilywing13 at 12:15 AM on July 13, 2009
It's a big enough place. We'll get there around nine and stay for at least two hours or so. After that, we might hit somewhere else or just stagger around the French Quarter for a while. Attendance at a Friday night event is not mandatory, but it's not a bad option. I'll post updates from the MeetUp twitter account in the post above.
And, hey! Feel free to set your own agendas or form your own groups. posted by ColdChef at 4:20 AM on July 13, 2009
I think we'll be heading there Friday night. We'll be the ones in the MeFi shirts. posted by y6y6y6 at 5:22 AM on July 13, 2009
Hells yes. Now we're off to a good start. posted by ColdChef at 5:48 AM on July 13, 2009
Mimi's sounds great. But if you like funky trombones, and who doesn't like funky trombones?, Bonerama is also playing later that night at the Rock and Bowl, which surely must still be the coolest venue in town, even after the recent move? Maybe it's too ambitious, but possibly someone might want to go there after?
I'm interested in coming along to a Friday night event. The hotel says check-in is at 4, so I'll be in town by then.
I have never met any of y'all so I feel weird just inviting myself... but I have an accent and hollow legs for snacks. posted by subbes at 5:06 PM on July 13, 2009

Congratulations. You're officially invited. Everyone is. See you at the bars. posted by ColdChef at 5:16 PM on July 13, 2009

That's true of most of us, right? It'll be weird for about 2 minutes. Then the drinks will kick in. posted by CunningLinguist at 5:26 PM on July 13, 2009
Oh, good point. posted by subbes at 5:29 PM on July 13, 2009
Yeah, I've met CunningLinguist briefly, jessamyn a couple of times, and not_on_display once. Everyone else, never met. I was talking to a friend about the meetup, and she was like, "Wait... You're going to New Orleans just to meet a bunch of strangers? These aren't your friends?" And I was like, "Well, not yet."
Anyway, I'm getting dinner earlier in the evening, but would most likely be up for a pint or two after that! posted by Greg Nog at 7:57 AM on July 14, 2009

I *still* haven't worked out how to explain this to anyone. I've tried vaguely saying "oh it's a convention..." and changing the subject, but that isn't really doing it. Even my closest friends think I'm nuts. posted by CunningLinguist at 9:52 AM on July 14, 2009

Yea, me too. I've resorted to just telling people I'm going to meet up with some friends (and drink, of course). posted by cabingirl at 10:13 AM on July 14, 2009
Luckily, I work in IT, so when I said "internet friend gathering" or "nerd party," everyone was jealous. My friends who play WoW liken it to meeting long-distance members of their guild. posted by lilywing13 at 10:36 AM on July 14, 2009
Heh, this is easier to explain than telling people you're going to Lebowskifest! I mean, at least we're not going to dress up like the Dude, or Walter, or ... a toe. Right? posted by tizzie at 10:43 AM on July 14, 2009

Yeah, turns out an acceptably vague answer to "why are you going to New Orleans?" is "to party!" posted by CunningLinguist at 11:47 AM on July 14, 2009

That reminds me, so that things don't get too awkward when we all meet, we should probably figure out who's Horde and who's Alliance beforehand. posted by Greg Nog at 11:58 AM on July 14, 2009

Strangely enough, the last time I was in New Orleans was for a WoW guild meetup. The best part (to me, who mostly plays a WoW widow) was that there was no gaming, only drinking. posted by cabingirl at 12:22 PM on July 14, 2009
"Why are you going to New Orleans?"
"* sigh * for work....."
Just kidding, I say "nerd party" too. posted by jessamyn at 9:01 AM on July 15, 2009
After explaining to my friends and family how I was hosting 9 people from the internet at my house for an entire weekend - Bunnystock 2006 - going to New Orleans for a party raises few eyebrows. Anyway, moonbird & I will probably show up at Mimi's at 9ish if I don't see y'all before where ever, as gordie's dive bar suggestion in the big thread is really tempting too. I like dive bars. posted by mygothlaundry at 11:10 AM on July 15, 2009
Fun! I'm riding with Team Houston and, barring something apocalyptic on the I-10, should be in town 4ish.
My friends (who are quite content to have me get their questions answered on AskMe) pity me like an orphan and giggle to others that I'm going to play with my internet stranger friends. posted by *s at 6:29 AM on July 16, 2009
Sweet, looks like I'll be in town and checked in early enough to meet you guys. Looking forward. I will most likely be wearing a monkeyfilter t-shirt for giggles. I know what jessamyn and ColdChef look like, otherwise I'll be scanning for special snowflakes. posted by middleclasstool at 10:36 AM on July 16, 2009
I'm in and checked in! What's up for tonight?! posted by absalom at 4:15 PM on July 17, 2009
I'm checked in too. Y'all let me know when you're at Mimi's. posted by middleclasstool at 5:01 PM on July 17, 2009
All right! We're going to stagger around a bit and get dinner, try to hit Mimi's about nine to hook up with the Nerd Herd. I'll have the chops and the F5 T-shirt. posted by absalom at 5:25 PM on July 17, 2009
I've been distracted with tequila and a trip to Deanie's to pig out. Not sure if we're making it to Mimi's but if any of y'all are gonna be staggering around the Quarter, I'll have my phone in my pocket. posted by lilywing13 at 7:14 PM on July 17, 2009
