We need to pick a date and time between July 17 and July 19 and a location.

All suggestions for venue and time are welcome.

July 17th is probably out for me, as that is my daughter's first birthday. The evening of the 18th would work for me, and I like the Hunter Gatherer a lot, but I am wide open.

I think Columbia should definitely be in on the 10th anniversary celebration. We may be a small contingent of mefites, but we have a lot of heart.

July 18 (a Saturday) is good for me also. I'm pro HG also, but am open to any other suggestions.

Yay! I'm down with coming to this. Saturday would be best for me. Maybe I can get my lurker husband to come too.

I work weekends, so I'd have to stick with maybe.

I might be able to make it down from Asheville for this.

Well, if others are thinking of coming into town (I'm looking at you Augusta, Greenville, Charleston and Charlotte) I'm happy to help make lodging arrangements so you won't have to drive back home immediately. Drop me a line.

I'm fairly new to MeFi but still would like to get in on this. I've learned so much since joining - what a great community! As of now, Saturday at HG works for me (I'm on call that day, but should be free after 5pm).

If there is no closer meet up, I will attempt to attend this one. Coming in from Wilmington, baby!

I am scheduled to work the 18th, but some folks owe me timeswaps, so I'm going to see what I can do. I would also definitely need an inexpensive place to stay/floor to sleep on, as I don't want to enjoy a night of Mefi-wonderfulness and then make the 3.5 hour drive back to Wowtown...

I would be coming down from Asheville, NC, possibly with the Ms.

I'm still watching this for progress and updates. =)

I'd be interested. :)

Okay, I'm reasonably not-busy now and can start to dedicate more brain cells to this event.

What, if any concerns do people have that I can work with?
What will people want to do (besides drink, eat and socialize)?

While I'm officially the "organizer" I'm really just more of a go-to point, give me your best ideas and I'll do my best to make them happen.

As long as there's some rum, I'm down for most anything. Are there any underage folks we should be thinking about? Is HG ok for under 21's?
posted by chiababe at 7:53 PM on May 11, 2009

To the best of my knowledge, HG stocks rum and allows all ages in. It is a non-smoking establishment like every other bar/eatery in Columbia, so out-of-towners should be aware.

Since July 18 seems to be the consensus, shall we set a time? To those coming in from elsewhere, what would work best for you?

Also, here's a Google list of hotels close to the establishment for those interested.

Does anyone think there would be enough of a turn out for a Greenville SC event too?

I would be interested in coming, and I would be coming from Asheville, too!
Anybody want to carpool?

Since no objections have been raised, I've gone ahead and set the date/time/location. So I hope that's cool with everyone.

Also, I've added a new thread right above this one specifically for requesting rides, lodging, etc. Be sure check it and see if you can help a fellow MeFite out.

Think we can get the governor and his squeeze to come to our meetup? I bet we'd get awesome press coverage. :)

He could probably use a drink right now, I'll drop him a line...

I prefer people's company pre-getting caught. Thats when they're fun. Afterwards its all tears and Jesus and regret.

Yeah, but if I can sell him on my idea to get shrimp and grits to be the state meal, and he signs it in as a final act, maybe we can all win a little here.

I'll be out of town for this, sadly, but please somebody drink a Hunter-Gatherer ESB for me.

I'm lame and backing out at the last minute. My buddy's band is in town that night and I haven't missed a show of theirs yet, and it's a rare oportunity to hang out with my best friend. Hoist one for me!

I sent MeMail to everyone listed on the front page with more details. If you have any further questions let me know asap, because I'll be out of touch tomorrow.

I just had to move myself to the maybe column at the last minute because my brother and his fiancé have decided to come into town for my daughter's birthday party and stay with us tonight. Maybe I can see if they want to go have a beer with people I know from the internet tonight after all the guests leave and the baby is asleep, but that is a big maybe and I may not be able to make it at all. If I do get to come out, it will be late. Sorry everybody for being flaky.

Well, I was a bit surprised when Sanford took me up on our offer to speak, and turns out he's a hell of a story teller, by the end on the night he had us all in stitches. Even Thomas Pynchon was impressed. The real highlight had to be when we convinced Keith and Mick to play a quickie concert on the State House steps, and then when Lindsey Graham pulled out his harmonica, things really got crazy... too bad I don't have any pictures, because if you weren't there, well... Who'd believe it?

Seriously though... thanks to Leslie for coming out. Maybe we can have a meetup of more than two next time...
