We need to pick a date and time between July 17 and July 19 and a location.

I hate Monday morning hangovers - so I hope we don't go with the 19th.

I don't drink enough - at one sitting - to get a hangover, but the guilt (born baptist) of drinking on a Sunday would still be reeling around my head come Monday...

Don't worry. I'll drink enough for both of us.

How about the 18th, then? And I'm open to suggestions as to location.

Or we could have a Moveable Feast -- we'll have one beer at every O'Charley's in the metro area, and take pix of ourselves in front of a bunch of identical signs.

Also -- a good friend of mine tends bar at a popular sports bar nearby. This tends to result in FREE DRAFT BEER, though you didn't hear it from me.

Upside: free beer!
Downside: loud sports bar

I await your suggestions with trembling anticipation.

Being of (mostly) Irish descent and temperament, I must curse and spit upon the earth surrounding O-Charley's every chance I get - those coprorate bastards trademarks the O' and I would prefer not to go to jail (again this year).

The 18th sounds good - I'd prefer quieter to louder and you may remember that I still owe you a beer. (And you still owe me details on the homophobic/closeted murderous cop.) Plus it looks like MeFi will buy you at least one drink (I do have a paypal account).

Maybe we do the moveable feast thing with all of the Peyton Places (I, II, and III) around northside?

I'm kidding, I don't want to get stabbed either. Also, I only know where Peyton Place II is located.

A lack of yuppies and fraternity types would be a plus.

They trademarked the O' ?

Heh. I violate their copyright every time I sign my name. Awesome.

OK, so the 18th it is.

I've never been to Peyton PLace (I, II, or III). Are they strip clubs? I've been to the Volcano Room... nice vibe. It felt very well-armed. Plus, booty.

How about The Garage if it's not raining? It tends to be kinda yuppified, though. But nice and quiet.

Or, hell, we could just go to The Nick. Rawk. We'll be moving on before they collect cover and the bands start...

What part of town is best for you?

I've never been to Peyton Place II either - its near Legion Field on 8th Avenue. It looks like one of those places with a lot of syringes and glass tubes on the bathroom floor. I think they have some small fires every now and again - so its probably a better place to visit in winter...

Actually The Garage seems like exactly the kind of place a Metafilter meet-up would take place and would make for some great photo ops. (I like the Nick too though and if there are too many khakis, slacks, and button downed shirts at The Garage then we could always stumble down the hill to the Nick or drive over to Marty's...)

Southside is definitely the best area for me - I live in Mount Olive about 14 miles north of Southside.

Also, I think The Garage might draw in some of our fellow brummie Mefites. Hopefully some other brummies will chime in here since we are planning this two months in advance...

The Garage, July 18, 7 PM?

What's a brummie?

A denizen of Birmingham is a BirmingHamster.

I'm pro-Garage (good point about the photo ops, cinemafiend), and as BOP's gf can guarantee attendance. I also heartily support a stop at Marty's and/or the Nick. So my contribution here is...oh, yeah! One more attendee.

I've been told that people in the UK call the inhabitants of their Birmingham "brummies" - I like it because it has heft and sounds a bit more mean-spirited than Birminghamster/hamians/et al.

I was just trying to sneak it into the lingo here - the italics did not help my ploy.

Oh and I checked the online Birmingham News archives on stories about Peyton Place II and I think it closed in 2006 (the owner died) and they only had one fire back in 2002.

The "original" Peyton Place on Graymont may still be around - it has different owners...

Anytime that weekend works for me. I can't stand the Nick (sorry) but the Garage and/or Marty's and/or pretty much anywhere else is good.

I just wanted to tell you guys that I thank you for inviting me for a second time to a meet up. I never made it to the first one and unfortunately I've moved down to Orange Beach this past week and I don't think I'll be back in town for the 10th anniversary meet up. Maybe I'll be able to make it to the next one though.
