Buffalo Planning Thread

We need to pick a date and time between July 17 and July 19 and a location.

I know meetups in Buffalo have only had moderate success, but I have been on Metafilter in some form or another since 1999, and I would really love to do this in Buffalo!

I'm essentially a Metafilter noob and usually pretty anti-social, but I'll show up and have a drink or something. :D

I'm in as long as it's the 17th or 18th :D

I can only do the 18th but am very up for that. Allentown?
posted by Riverine at 10:49 AM on May 9, 2009

Allentown is always good.

Any suggestions in Allentown?

Hardware?
posted by skoosh at 6:04 PM on May 10, 2009

Ok, if we do at on the 18th at Allen St Hardware, what time? They open at 5pm. Probably better to not do it too late, it's pretty packed there on most nights.
posted by hazyspring at 9:20 PM on May 10, 2009

6:30? 7? That way it's late enough, but not too late.
posted by Verdandi at 11:10 AM on May 11, 2009

I vote for 7. 6:30 is too many numbers to remember.
posted by skoosh at 3:31 PM on May 12, 2009

Hahaha nice reasoning.
posted by Verdandi at 3:43 PM on May 12, 2009

Hardware at 7 is good for me.

What's the number we need to have for MF to foot the bill? 10?
posted by Riverine at 6:04 PM on May 12, 2009

I have no idea, but I'm not exactly counting on any money. It's ok if we don't get any.
posted by hazyspring at 6:59 PM on May 12, 2009

Sure, I'm in.
posted by Kellydamnit at 9:20 AM on May 13, 2009

I am in.

Hey, what's it like there? Quiet-ish?
posted by Jinkeez at 11:42 AM on May 14, 2009

it can be during the dinner hour, but it's also a bar so later in the evening it'll be louder.
Sometimes they have live music, but it's of the jazz/folk variety, not rock bands.
posted by Kellydamnit at 7:19 PM on May 14, 2009

Yeah, that's the only thing I was concerned about it being too noisy. Which is why I was in favor of doing it earlier, rather than later.

I can scope it out in advance, if it's too noisy to talk I would be fine with changing the location.
posted by hazyspring at 9:11 PM on May 14, 2009

I've been there a bunch of times (I live in Allentown), and at 7 it shouldn't be bad. Only time I've seen it crazy then is during hockey season when the sabres were still in. They have some amazing appetizer food there, too. A good cheese board, and they also do a baked brie with berries that haunts my dreams.

K Gallighers is also nearby and usually a bit less rowdy. They have a bar, too, but more people go there for food than drinking. The Gate is an option, too... if we get enough people they may let us have the back room.
posted by Kellydamnit at 8:40 AM on May 15, 2009

Yeah, I am in favor of starting out at Allen St, and if it is too noisy moving somewhere else, as long as others are ok with this plan of attack.
posted by hazyspring at 9:42 AM on May 15, 2009

Ok, everyone! Also, if you think you are attending, please mark yes or maybe, because 1) this will help us determine if we get money and 2) If we want to move to a different space with a room or something.

I noticed there are a few people that made comments, but haven't marked attending or not. Thanks!

I'm putting myself down as a maybe. I'd love to go to this and I always enjoy bars in Buffalo.

Are there any good hotels around there? Doesn't have to be ultra cheap but I would like something that would be clean and quiet. I'd be coming from Syracuse.
posted by Melsky at 5:40 PM on May 18, 2009

There's a Holiday Inn not even a mile away.
posted by Kellydamnit at 4:39 PM on May 19, 2009

I live in SF but there's a better than 50% chance I'll be in Fredonia over the anniversary period. If so, I'll be trying to get to the Bflo meetup!

I actually stayed at that holiday inn last time I went to bars in buffalo, and it was expensive and very noisy. People were drinking and talking loudly in the hallways until 4 in the morning and the hotel refused to ask them to stop. I'm not a wimp about noise but this was just over the top. I had thought by being in a large chain hotel and paying a lot it would be quieter but I guess not.

I seem to remember there was a smaller independent hotel around there and I wished I had stayed there last time.

Hotel Lenox, around the block? I wouldn't recommend it, it's kind of a roach motel. Lots of "pay by the month" customers, too. It's got a 2.5 rating on trip advisor.
There's a bunch of hotels downtown, which isn't far from Allentown.

I am very quiet but I have decided to try and come and listen nervously whilst you all talk :)

I'm sure a lot of us probably are pretty introverted Jinkeez. I am, I just force myself to be social on occasion. You'll probably fit right in. :)

I just wanted to say, I think this will be fun! And if we get bored, we can go play darts down the street.

Melsky, if you can afford a tiny splurge, the is one of the Mansion on Delaware most special places you might ever stay.
posted by Riverine at 9:53 PM on June 4, 2009

oh, I have a fun story about The Mansion on Delaware!

It's right by The Buffalo Club, which was THE social club for well to do gents last century. (not sure how it racks up now, I think I'm too poor to even look members in the eye) Millard Fillmore, Grover Cleveland, Roswell Park and the like. The Mansion was semi-affiliated. In that it was a very high end bordello that serviced the members of the Buffalo Club.

My ex works at the Buffalo Club now and he said you can, in fact, see straight into a few of the rooms from there. I guess back in the day the ladies would do some visual enticement from there. (now, obviously, drapes are provided.)

oh and hey, looks like we hit ten people!
posted by Kellydamnit at 10:27 PM on June 8, 2009

I wanted to go to the Mansion but I think their prices are a bit much for me right now! I will probably look at the downtown hotels.

...So I feel like we should talk about something while we wait for July 18th.

Uhh, who likes fudge?

:)
posted by Jinkeez at 11:43 AM on June 24, 2009

I'm not overly fond of fudge. Or brownies.... it's like they can't decide whether to be cookies or cake, and lack the goodnesses of either. But I do like cookies.

If there's no dog thing then, biscotti and I will attempt attendance. But there might be a dog thing.

(sorry to miss your email, kelly; I haven't checked that account in eons and forgot to disappear it after memail showed up)

I came here to make another random post and be all "OMG THIS WEEKEND!" except the meetup's not this weekend, it's like next weekend. So in the meantime, here is an MP3 of that old standby, Talkin' Proud!

Cheers, all, and oh--Enjoy Taste of Buffalo this weekend!

Oh good. I think I can be there.
posted by oflinkey at 11:05 PM on July 12, 2009

Oh hey, I'll def show up for this one. I already know Kellydamnit (we have several intersecting groups, Kelly) and I've wanted to meet ROU_Xenophobe for quite a while now :) Plus I dig Hardware. I'm old: I remember when it was a hardware store. And I remember the little old lady that worked the counter.

And Riverine, we may need to talk about Hampshire. It's been many years since I lived in the happy valley and I indulge in every opportunity to live vicariously through other residents.
posted by jdfan at 5:55 PM on July 15, 2009

jdfan, I haven't even been back to the Valley in some time, but that would be cool.

I am looking forward to this! I will be there promptly at 7, as I have to cut out after a while to attend a going away party. Everyone come early!

I'm really looking forward to it, I just got our hotel reservations.

I may be late (well, I WILL be late) since the BF has family in town and I need to do the dinner thing with them. Can I task someone with texting me if the party migrates? Email is in my profile.
posted by Kellydamnit at 4:06 PM on July 17, 2009

Sent kellydamnit an email. See you all there.

I had such a nice time, I forgot to network! I am a librarian and technical writer, and always looking for interesting projects (organizing, data management) to take on. I also walk dogs and pet sit in the neighborhood, so think of me if you need such services.

I enjoyed meeting everyone and we had a nice time in Buffalo! I like Buffalo a lot more than Syracuse and would like to relocate there someday.
