Awesome, this will be right on my birthday! posted by lolichka at 2:09 PM on May 5, 2009
There have been several of us already beginning to discuss this, including myself and StickyCarpet. Anyone looking to do some work on this one with us, just say the word. Ideally, we were imagining a dedicated planning crew to get this thing executed, but of course all suggestions will be given proper consideration. posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 2:12 PM on May 5, 2009
TPS, I'd love to be part of said crew. posted by ocherdraco at 2:16 PM on May 5, 2009
I'm down for helping out, too. posted by Airhen at 2:49 PM on May 5, 2009
I should add: I'm down for helping out, but I may not be in town for the actual meetup, since I'll be in Iowa at some point that week. posted by Airhen at 2:55 PM on May 5, 2009
Hoping to make this my first meetup! posted by milestogo at 3:34 PM on May 5, 2009
If a quorum of volunteers can be assembled, I'll invite the committee over for dinner on the upper west side so we can coordinate. Remember, the root of committee is commitment, so carve out some time if you want to help.
I mentioned it in my other post here, but I'd like to lobby for finding a place where we can control the environment for at least 48 hours in advance. A centrally located 1500 square foot loft space, with a smoking terrace, is my dream.
I have all the hardware to turn a raw space into a club. posted by StickyCarpet at 4:41 PM on May 5, 2009
I'm certainly willing to help out in any way that I can.
Thanks, StickyCarpet, for the hospitable offer! I agree with your idea of a meeting space - a smoking terrace would be ideal. posted by amicamentis at 4:47 PM on May 5, 2009
I'll be a recent transplant to the city. I hope to enjoy y'all's company in attendance. posted by greta simone at 5:05 PM on May 5, 2009

I'm willing to bring food and/or help coordinate the mass making of food if someone has a large kitchen. posted by lolichka at 6:25 PM on May 5, 2009
robocop is bleeding: Yarg. Didn't we just come down there?

Why are New Yorkers so noncommittal? posted by gman at 7:09 AM on May 6, 2009
I'm not really comfortable answering that just yet, gman. posted by Greg Nog at 7:45 AM on May 6, 2009
If you need any help, TPS, let me know. posted by spec80 at 7:59 AM on May 6, 2009
I'll be there. posted by lunit at 8:02 AM on May 6, 2009
I notice that the New Yorkers are having a difficult time committing. Let me make a suggestion: come to New Orleans, the land that time (and the US Government) forgot. Sure, you've got ThePinkSuperhero, but we've got hundreds of drag queens who know just as many showtunes as she does. Plus--free plastic beads! Who can pass up an offer so good? Come to New Orleans, the breast--uh...best choice for your 10th Anniversary MetaFilter Meetup Party. posted by ColdChef at 8:46 AM on May 6, 2009
ColdChef is just hoping you'll come out so he can kill you and have fun burying the body. posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 9:42 AM on May 6, 2009
And there is no drag queen who knows as many showtunes as I do! posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 9:42 AM on May 6, 2009
*sing song* I have a meet up ideaaaa. posted by spec80 at 9:52 AM on May 6, 2009
I'll be there, and count me in to help with whatever. I would love to make/help make food, if such a thing would be desired. posted by Jon_Evil at 12:23 PM on May 6, 2009
Oh it was to have a Broadway off between TPS and a drag queen, but that's for a different meet up.
How about a pig roast? Or a pig and vegetable roast? posted by spec80 at 12:44 PM on May 6, 2009
Yea, sure why not. What kind of help is required? I'll actually be in New Orleans starting on the 7th and coming back the morning of the 12th, so if there's anything that doesn't require my presence a couple of days in advance, I can lend a hand (food, decorations, what have you. OMG ARE WE GONNA HAVE A DECORATION COMMITTEE??) posted by kkokkodalk at 12:47 PM on May 6, 2009
I would be partial to a roast. Who's got a backyard where we can dig a pit? posted by Jon_Evil at 2:53 PM on May 6, 2009
Looks like there might be some audio/visual hookup between NOLA and NYC, so let's think about the TPS/dragqueen showtune duets.
The only competition will be for overall coolness, and I promise you ColdChef, we will bury YOU. posted by StickyCarpet at 2:56 PM on May 6, 2009
I just got these guys a $2500 grant from my company so I think we may get a good deal with them if we are looking to rent a space. posted by spec80 at 3:41 PM on May 6, 2009
There's a fantastic drag queen named Britney Houston who performs at the gay bar at 109th and Broadway. She has her own wind machine and everything. Maybe she's a Mefite... posted by amicamentis at 9:31 PM on May 6, 2009
So, honestly, what are the possibilities for a location? Has anyone been to/organized a meifi meetup before? Do we just all show up to the same bar/park/library conference room? Do we go to somebody's house? Do we rent out a VFW hall? Are there even VFW halls in NYC? posted by Jon_Evil at 12:40 PM on May 7, 2009
So ColdChef has succeeded in poaching at least one New York mefite; I just can't say no to Men Prettier Than Girls. posted by Greg Nog at 3:22 PM on May 7, 2009
Relax, Jon, venue is in progress and will be announced ASAP. posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 3:23 PM on May 7, 2009
So, yeah, I put maybe, but I'm fairly certain I'll be there. Never been to a MeFi meetup before, but a 10th Anniversary party seems like a great first.
Woo. Hopefully I will have found a new apartment by that time, too.
I'm bad at planning. I intend to show up. I would be happy to help. posted by sciencegeek at 9:11 AM on May 8, 2009
There are plenty of halls available around NYC, although, I don't know of any off the top of my head.
Also, I volunteer my sound system if some transportation (van) can be arranged. I can also help with the party, I have worked setting up fancy parties so I can do draping or decorations or whatnot. posted by fuq at 9:15 AM on May 8, 2009
Dang. I just lost a three paragrah post. here goes agin, abreviated.
fuq: I'l contact you to see how our sound system might comlement each other. My system is not so much a home appliance as it is a fomula one/ homemede Saturn V / high energy physics demonstrationn / laborator precision psychophysics transducer. Damn fun to listen to, most people aren't familair with this kind of sound accuracy.
I have one good video projector, any more of any quality would be greatly useful and appreciated
There will be a setup and load in crew of some sort, but therewill also be an organized load out. ANy loaned gear will be inventoried, labeled, kept secure, returned to the owners in an orderly fashion. No one will handed a box of dangling wires on the way out at 4 am.
While we continue to evaluate venues, let me say I have a large clean secure office space that will be available for a week or so in advance. Any travelers who would like to store any items, take a few hours to chill, assemble any props or costumes, etc can use this space.
It is not intended as a residential option, but it wouldn' surpise if a yoga mat toting bohemian or two ends up crashing there some crazy night. posted by StickyCarpet at 11:23 AM on May 8, 2009
Do we rent out a VFW hall? Are there even VFW halls in NYC?
There are, in fact, many VFW halls in NYC. A couple of friends rented one out in Park Slope to host their DJ/birthday party. posted by andrewraff at 12:52 PM on May 8, 2009
andrewraff, it would certainly be worth checking out what the VFW halls have to offer. I can't tell much about hwere they actually are from that link. Can we see them on a google map somehow? posted by StickyCarpet at 3:03 PM on May 8, 2009
Eeeee I'm excited! I'll actually be around for this one! :) posted by Zephyrial at 7:46 PM on May 8, 2009

I want to wear a fancy dress. posted by kimdog at 8:42 AM on May 12, 2009
I can help. If this were last year I would have had a pal with a party space for cheap/free, but there are probably bargains out there in this economy. I am also a solid bartender and would LOVE to make drinks for people. posted by vrakatar at 7:45 PM on May 14, 2009
I'm happy to help with setup and/or food preparation. Fancy dress should definitely be encouraged or at the least markedly welcome. posted by cytherea at 9:25 PM on May 14, 2009
Would a theme be a terrible idea? Meta, blue/green/grey, Pepsi Potter (vibration not included), or a much better idea? Is that fun or just too much work? posted by cytherea at 9:43 PM on May 14, 2009
I might actually have a Metafilter Blue tuxedo somewhere in my parents' basement. I need a lime green bow tie and a gray pocket square. Oh no. posted by Jon_Evil at 10:20 PM on May 14, 2009
My "maybe" on my attendance will probably change to a yes or a no once we know an actual date and other details...
And if you're doing this at someone's abode, I could be part of the food committee. posted by EmpressCallipygos at 7:08 AM on May 15, 2009
I'm sure there will be some form of organized meetupping ongoing throughout the allocated time period. It does seem as if the other threads have pretty much converged on Sat the 18th, so it's probably safe to assume that that will be prime time here as well. posted by StickyCarpet at 11:19 PM on May 15, 2009

Or even incentivised, like you get a goldfish in a plastic bag or something. posted by StickyCarpet at 5:48 PM on May 16, 2009
I like this idea, this meetup idea, yes.
I am available to help load in and help with setup. I was, in a previous life, a member of IATSE Local 15, so know my way around all things hauling, taping down, and plugging in. posted by crunchywelch at 1:36 PM on May 18, 2009
Oh crap, the 18th will not work for me. :-( I am a judge for a playwriting contest, and we have a reading for one of the plays on the 18th which I cannot miss.
Can I place a vote for either the 17th OR the 19th? posted by EmpressCallipygos at 9:43 PM on May 18, 2009
Unfortunately, I think the 18th is going to end up being the date, but hopefully the event will be long enough that you can pop by. posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 2:49 PM on May 19, 2009
This would be my first meetup if I go. That's exciting! posted by KateHasQuestions at 12:05 PM on May 20, 2009
As a veteran of internet meetups (not MF), I think it will be a great time. Sadly, I will be out of town on that date. Enjoy, all! posted by mnb64 at 10:11 PM on May 21, 2009
One possibly strange question...it seems that the location is going to be a basement loft. Are there windows in the space, by any chance? posted by thegreatfleecircus at 3:50 PM on May 23, 2009
Yes, there are two large windows and a door at one end of the space, that will have fans. posted by StickyCarpet at 10:41 AM on May 27, 2009
I'm in, too. Will there be any surprise guests?
Hmmm....I wonder if... posted by Skygazer at 11:43 AM on June 2, 2009

What about liquor? If we need to, and if I have a weeks notice, I can get cases of wine much cheaper than any liquor store from my distributors. I suck at picking out wines, though, so someone else would have to go through the catalogs and choose which ones would be good. posted by newpotato at 6:26 PM on June 6, 2009

Just found out I'm having knee surgery on the 16th. Sadly, I'm going to have to bail on this, which totally sucks. I was really looking forward to coming and meeting some Mefites IRL. :(
Oh, and the secret code should most definitely involve bacon and/or fedoras.
Have fun, everybody. I look forward to photographic evidence of the event! posted by dancinglamb at 6:54 PM on July 1, 2009
