NYC, we have a meetup location!

The NYC 10th Anniversary meetup date and location has been set! Come on in for details.

We are set for Saturday July 18th from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m. in a private loft on Franklin Street (a few blocks south of Canal) between Church and Broadway. It will be one flight of stairs down from street level; if anyone needs help with the stairs, people will be on hand to assist, as there is no elevator. There is free weekend parking on the streets in this area on the weekends. All subways, PATH trains, etc, are ready by.

There is a small outdoor smoking area provided. There will be plenty of room for food, drink, dancing, congregating, and video chatting with other meetups.

More information will be posted in the coming weeks for planning and volunteer opportunities.

Oh, yay, you're starting in the afternoon! I can make it after all!

Is this a Mini-Mefite friendly event (read: kid-friendly)? I have no problem leaving the crumbsnatchers home, but I figured I would ask since it's starting so early.

Hmmm, not sure. There will be a lot of people coming and going, alcohol, loud music and technical equipment. I suppose it would depend on the child.

Sweet. Mere minutes from my place. Let me know if you need me to tarbend.

No worries. I can get a sitter ;)

....Oh, DUH, it's JULY 18th! I'm an idiot -- I can make it after all. Yay!

hurray, I get a giant mefi party for my birthday!

I'll be there!

dancinglamb -- I was wondering the same thing. I would really like my mini-mefite to have this experience, too....

Use your judgment for your kids. My understanding based on my level of participation is that there will be loud music and certain electronic items that are a)fragile, b) really heavy, c) will electrocute a human being to death, and/or d) all of the above but worse. Other concerns include raunchy dancing, people being drunk around kids, and my goddamn filthy fucking mouth.

On the other hand, a well-behaved kiddo in my opinion would be fine, and interacting with so many different people is good for children. I am also willing to explain technical things to any youngsters interested in my mixing board or the speakers.

This is going to be catshit insane!!!! I can't wait! And I NEVER get excited about parties, and I'm in college!

Freaking YES. Does a private loft mean that this is somebody's house? or that we are renting a location?
posted by milestogo at 4:40 PM on June 5, 2009

Private loft means we have received a donation of the empty space for two months (normal rent would be $12,000 for this period.) Thank you to TRIGEM Realty for this generous contribution.

I rented a truck and loaded in the bulk of the heavy gear yesterday. Metafilter's own Mr. fuq spent something like 14 hours of hard, sweaty work doing most of the heavy lifting.

Unlike some of the other events that are collecting $40 upfront fees, we'll be counting on voluntary donations on site to defray our expenses, like moving all this stuff back out.

Anyone available to volunteer, chime in, I'll be setting up a mailing list and begging for various forms of help, pretty regularly from now on.

holy shit.

No shit. Kudos to the organizers. New York looks to be a blowout. I'm both eager and tremulous to actually see the people behind the words. I'm unable at present to contribute much in the way of money, but I do know a number of performance artists who could be enticed to perform. And I'm happy to help with the food/setup. Put me on the magic elf list.

I can make some unusual types of sangria if anyone's interested...

Shall we just go to Franklin Street and listen for the music on the appointed night? Or will the address be posted soon?
posted by Mo Nickels at 7:19 PM on June 21, 2009

The address shall be posted in plenty of time for the gathering.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 10:03 AM on June 22, 2009

Hey, I'll certainly be attending the par-tay, and I won't be working for two weeks or so beforehand, so I'm happy to volunteer my time and grunt power (such as it is) to help somehow.

So, with this many people, is it a totally cheesy to suggest nametags with our MeFi handles on them?
posted by amro at 7:06 AM on June 26, 2009

amro, I agree. At the very least, perhaps we can label people's drink glasses. There's no shame in nametags. You can pick you own font!
posted by StickyCarpet at 3:05 PM on June 26, 2009

I don't think name tags are cheesy, which is why I was planning on providing them. They won't be required!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 10:39 PM on June 26, 2009

Cool, thanks Teeps.

I'll be a new transplant to the city. Any other newcomers want to make a point of finding each other so we can awkwardly idle by and listen while other people talk about things/places we don't know about?
posted by greta simone at 10:40 AM on June 28, 2009

How about the newcomers just write "New!" on their nametags, so the rest of us can explain what we're talking about? No need to stand on the other side of the gymnasium.
posted by dammitjim at 8:01 AM on June 29, 2009

Exactly. Mingle, mingle.

I'm on holiday in the US and might be in NY on the 18th, so ... if I show up I'm down for that, greta simone :P
posted by Xany at 9:37 AM on July 5, 2009

Hey Whelk, there will be ample opportunities to do just that. We should be having a meeting soon to determine what needs doing and who is going to do it.
posted by vrakatar at 7:35 AM on July 6, 2009

Yay. I'm obligation free after the 11th.
posted by The Whelk at 8:17 AM on July 6, 2009

I just confirmed that I'll be around that weekend, so sorry about chiming in late but I'd love to help out with prep if it's needed...
posted by Dormant Gorilla at 9:25 AM on July 7, 2009

The space is indeed awesome. I stopped by last night to help with putting together acoustic thingies, and I'll be back whenever my slightly klutzy and limited skills are needed.

greta simone: I'm relatively new to NY as well. I've just adjusted to a north-south axis city from an east-west axis city, but I find the neighborhoods confusing still.

DAMNIT! I'm no longer going to be able to make this. I am so bummed out, but I'll look for you all on flickr. Argh!

It's three days until the party. Where's the address?
posted by Mo Nickels at 1:25 PM on July 15, 2009

Seriously, can we get an actual street number? So we know which door to knock on? I realize we can probably follow the noise, but there might be more than one party on the block, you know. It is midsummer, the time of loud parties.

Are you guys meeting at my friend Harry's place (the VQ)?
posted by mds35 at 1:01 PM on July 16, 2009

The quill is no more, sadly, mds35. But it would have been a great location. (I am a pal of Harry's)

We will post the address tomorrow. Since anyone can see this thread, we want to limit any chance that our party ends up on crashapartyandbeadouchebag.com., or something like that.

Too bad. Say hello to Mr. Bruinius for me.
posted by mds35 at 1:51 PM on July 16, 2009

Argh, I told Sticky this in person but my *totally free* schedule got filled up and I feel bad hence my horrifying latness. I'm gonna see if I can clear a spare hour or such away Friday for the All Hands On Deck.
posted by The Whelk at 2:30 PM on July 16, 2009

Thanks Whelk. Sticky almost has the teleporter working, and if I can finish the force field generator we can use the zero-g float chamber for relaxing.
