I'm planning on heading down to NO (never been, probably will never go if I don't go now due to my US citizen husband refusing to go over the border) for their meetup but if something comes up and I have to stay here (like the fact that I am lazy about getting my passport) then yeah, I'm up for it. Did you have any thoughts on where?

I vote for the Annex, cause I'm lazy and cause I like the Annex.

Cool - I'm in. Anywhere you can get to by the TTC is good for me.

Yup, I'm in, and TTC preferred 'cos I'll be busing it from Hamilton. Unless people want to come here. Which you should. Because Hamilton is AWESOME. Really. Stop laughing.

We should go somewhere with a patio! There are several places on Markham St. that could work.

Oh and thanks for organizing, gman. I was just recently thinking of suggesting another Toronto meetup so this is perfect.

Also, how did you select the people to be invited? Is there a way to message all identified Torontonians?

I always "eye" the users who live closest to me, wondering what they're like... I'll probably message them re: this event.

July 18th is good with me.

The Annex is a good spot because it's central and on the Bloor line. There was a Flickr meet up at the Dog's Bollocks on Queen West recently. They have 10$ pitchers -- I shit you not.

I'll bring a different camera this time. Maybe something less all up in your grill.

Can we try the east end?

The Roy, par exemple?
posted by joeclark at 2:42 PM on May 6, 2009

I still think somewhere on the subway line would be nice. The Roy does look like a nice spot, but Queen is such a crap road to travel on by the TTC. Or by car for that matter.
posted by chunking express at 2:55 PM on May 6, 2009

Imperial Pub and Library is near Dundas Square, on the Yonge line, so that might diffuse some East/West fights.

In the Annex, of note from the last thread: The Green Room, Victory Cafe, Clintons, Paupers, the Duke of Wellington, or the Bedford Academy.

2. You don't ask questions.
3. No excuses.
4. No lies.
5. You have to trust me.

My vote is still the Annex, but another venue besides the Bedford - just to change it up a bit.

Paupers has a rooftop patio... but a limited beer selection.

Imperial Pub & Library is spacious and could accommodate a large crowd but the food is lacking.

Victory Cafe has a nice, big, patio but we'd have to reserve the whole thing (not that that's a problem :).
posted by cranberrymonger at 8:38 PM on May 6, 2009

I think I'll have to come to this one. I can't think of anything that is likely to come up that would prevent me, unless it's my niece having a baby around that time... but it's not like the baby won't keep until I see it.
posted by orange swan at 8:51 PM on May 6, 2009

I am going to say the exact opposite of what I used to say about meetups three years ago - preferably not the Annex, thx.

However, if that's central and easy for all, I will go wherever. I am still a maybe as I'm not entirely certain I will be in town (fingers crossed!).
posted by SassHat at 9:04 PM on May 6, 2009

posted by dirtynumbangelboy at 10:14 PM on May 6, 2009

I'm in for the 18th and nth the Annex recommendation - somewhere we can officially reserve things. I love the Vic but it'll be crammed if we don't make arrangements.
posted by machine at 9:44 AM on May 7, 2009

I’m just sick and tired of Annex dives. And anything downtown. “Downtown” is not a “neutral” location.

The Roy is brand spanking new and you can get there via the 501, 72, or 504, or by driving or biking. It isn’t in Ajax or anything.
posted by joeclark at 3:22 PM on May 7, 2009

My preference is for something near the subway, rather than on a bus or streetcar route. It makes it possible to stay later and still catch the last subway back to the middle of nowhere where I live. Otherwise, I have to drive, because there's no way I can afford cab fare all the way from wherever back up to North York and then I can't drink, and let me tell you, some of y'all and your damned cameras would be a lot more tolerable if I were drinking.

I do want to second the suggestion for someplace where we can make a reservation, preferably for our own room. The Bedford Academy meetup was crazy loud and overcrowded, and I didn't half get to talk to most of the people because it was impossible to move.
posted by jacquilynne at 4:02 PM on May 7, 2009

I may have to finally attend one of these. I hope you people aren't crazy.

Subway-accessible please.
posted by hayvac at 4:54 PM on May 7, 2009

Idea: The Troubadour at 3071 Dundas West. Through a connection, I think we can have the place for the night (providing you people DRINK). There's a patio out back as well. We could have a band or just blast our own beats.

Getting there on the TTC... you'd get off at Dundas West Station and briefly take the 40. Yes, it's a small pain in the ass, but a fuck of a lot better than sharing a space. Having said that, I'll also offer up two things:

a) I'll cover anyone's cab back to Dundas West before the subway closes (no singles please!)

b) Anyone who's left when the bar closes can come back to my nearby house to continue on partying.

Perhaps someone else has connections for a private function? *Remember, it's a Saturday night, and thus much tougher to get one.

...waits for joeclark to freak.
posted by gman at 5:32 PM on May 7, 2009

Yeah, okay, I'm open to anything as long as we have a plan to get those of us who need to get back home via the Go back toward something that will bring us to Union late at night. I trust gman's judgment, he's a good guy.

Anyone else needing the Lakeshore West line on the way home? We could exit together perhaps, aiming for the last train?
posted by Hildegarde at 5:49 PM on May 7, 2009

I'm a west-ender, so The Troubadour sounds great, but I hope it (or some other large venue we could reserve and take over) could work for people who need to transit in. I'm willing to go just about anywhere.

But this is shaping up to be a very large meetup, and as jacquilynne said, we really do need a lot of space and some control over the noise level of the room.

I know we're not kicking off til 8-ish, so I'm not sure if there's interest? We could simply let people order from the menu (I had the 'big boy grilled cheese' last night mmmmmmmmmmmm) or she'd be willing to do appetizers (no cost).
posted by gman at 5:46 AM on May 17, 2009

Girl who owns the Troubadour (we'll call her Kristy from here on out) suggested 70's cocktail party appetizers: fondue, pigs in a blanket, those big cheese balls, devilled eggs, etc. Sounded good to me. Feel free to add to this list, or offer up alternative suggestions. She's worried about empty stomach pukers, so free appetizers seems logical to me.

Sweet, people! Saw Kristy (owner of Troubadour) yesterday. Gonna finalize things with her in early July. We're not interested in a band, right? Other than that, any particular appetizer theme? I mentioned 70's cocktail party appetizers upthread. Someone else mentioned edamame, and another person - pita+hummus.

If you have edamame and pita+hummus I will probably love you forever

Also sweet dang the troubadour is close to me, I would bike there if I didn't have to put ODiV on my handlebars or tow him in a small wagon

"Framed photos by local photographer Matthew Marigold hang on the wall - a series of clowns boozing it up (apparently friends of the bar, and other people from the Junction community who offered to have their faces painted), all on sale in support of the Contact Photo Festival."

I bought one the other day of a buddy dressed as a clown. FANTASTIC.

Oh good, I can now start (affectionately) calling it "The Troub" instead of worrying if the last syllable is pronounced "door" or "dour."

Is everyone excited or what?!

This is the greatest painting ever.

That is indeed the greatest painting ever.

I'm excited, but I'd be more excited if the 'maybes' could firm things up by the beginning of the month for when I go back to give Kristy numbers.

Hey that bogTO post includes comments from two people criticizing the blogger's writing. Should we get them Metafilter accounts or at least invite them to the meetup or something?

Okay, this required some finagling; dumping the kids with my parents and driving home in the middle of our vacation, but I'm firming up to a yes 'cause it sounds like fun.

Two mefi members (myself and mr. jb) are moving from CT to Toronto (back home, where there is TTC and roti!) starting on the 15th, but we are driving ourselves and all our worldly goods in a manual gear truck through the wilds of upstate New York. So I'm not sure whether we'll be there on time or not, I'm sorry. Though we would like to come if we can.

This whole 10th ann. thing has made me realise that I have been reading mefi for at least 8, if not 9 years - and it was already locked when I came along. I had no idea it was so young then.

Double confirming - got my VIA ticket, I'm coming down from London, ON and will have my sister(Sun Man Ray Beam - a nonMetaFilterian) in tow. Looking forward to seeing everyone! (not really, count me among the shy introverts)

As far as music, after party, etc: no iPod, but I rarely travel without a stick of music; I'll say no to after party; my digicam died :( but I might bring the ol' OM-1 and shoot some B&W.
